"Poison Apple" by SinfulEyes of Deviant Art |
In this orchard of silver apples upon
the trees
Is temptation served on a platter, but
lest
Picked by none other but the delicate
hand
Of the eternal strife between mankind
and I
A chrome masterpiece upon the bar
stool.
Waiting to be tapped from the faucet of
hops
Into a tall glass of water and lustful
hysteria
Swirling around in circles from laced
wisteria
Her delicate and soothing bliss a
tremor
On the lips of a fallen angel whose
wings
Lift me into the lost and forgotten
sky.
I drank the applesauce and licked my
fingers
Clean of the red blood so delicately
streaming
And tasted of the seven deadliest of
sins,
But I didn't listen to the asp of the
silver trees
Nor my father who knew better than I,
And now I lay here in squandering sire
Spread eagle in the chemicals of my
desire.
A nice little twist on the poisoned apple from Snow White mixed with concepts of the Garden of Eve.
Kenn, what an interesting take on these two stories. Had never thought before about the fact that Eve was tempted by the apple & that there was a poisoned apple on Snow White. I wonder what might have happened if there was a poisoned apple in the Garden of Eden, but (of course) that is a different poem. I do think that temptation CAN be served on a platter...it is all around us, sometimes hard to avoid. And the taste of the seven deadly sins can be very seductive indeed.
ReplyDeleteGood to see you back at Poetry Pantry. Happy New Year!
Thanks, I'm glad to be back. I've had quite the new year thus far, and it is all just getting started.
ReplyDeleteCuriously there was a moment in my life that I realised that I knew better than my father. I don't think that mankind could have advanced as they have done without succumbing to temptation...if you call what we have now as advancement! Much to ponder on in your piece.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more. Temptation is a way to keep the world in balance. There are positive and negative affects to making choices.
DeleteHmmm! Well said/written, thought provoking and in agreement.

Thanks R.K.
DeleteA couple of lines really popped out at me - "Waiting to be tapped from the faucet of hops" except I thought the word was hope, at first. And "a tremor
ReplyDeleteOn the lips of a fallen angel whose wings Lift me into the lost and forgotten sky." Cool write.
Thank you Sherry. I tried my best to make this one stand out a bit more than my other ones.
DeleteThis symbol of an apple.. That poison you thought was sins and ended in death. What a wonderful way to weave it together.. Love the rhymes and rhythm of this piece Kenn,
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed my take on the symbolism of the apple.
Delete'chemicals of my desire'- well done
ReplyDeleteThanks Suyash.
DeleteOh man, very good, sir! So much to think about here. So much wonderful imagery . . . and passion . . . and wording. I like it :)
ReplyDeleteOddly enough I found a poetry word prompt for this one, and it worked out pretty well I think. It is amazing how imaginative a poetry prompt can be.
DeleteThis is a fist shaking it's quiet rage at addiction. I want to think that the speaker has hit the lowest of lows, but isn't completely spent yet... From here, s/he will stand, and start anew.
ReplyDeleteLove your use of symbolism all around: apple, silver, glass full of swirls...
I threw quite a few symbols of culture into this poem. Most of them I allowed influences from the prohibition period.
DeleteMaybe not the prohibition period. The time period in which the Great Gatsby took place.
